The US men’s team never lost to Panama in a World Cup qualifier. USMNT had never played well under head coach Gregg Berhalter. And if you had not heard how far you came, a 1-0 loss to Panama City took place on the fourth anniversary of the lowest history in history: its mysterious removal on the final day of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
But that’s why it’s worth it, and it doesn’t fit the headline: Back on October 10, 2017, Bruce Arena was accused of being arrogant enough to start a straight line in the last two USMNT games: 4- surprisingly, a priceless 2-1 defeat already took place in Trinidad & Tobago in Couva. Now we are, four years later, talking about a change in USMNT rankings and the loss of the World Cup qualifiers. So far the argument has been that Berhalter made too much from one game to the next – seven, to be exact.
Perhaps the best way to coach a national team is somewhere between zero subs and seven. This may make sense because some of the biggest teams in the game have a well-known backbone that defines them and sets the tone, their ideas and their meaning. The limbs that support and support the spine can change from sport to sport, but at the peak it remains unchanged.
The team’s well-known concept is sometimes lost in the years of analytics and game science: This is a social game, and football takes 11 of them – at least – holding a good concert to play games, plans and movements correctly. As human beings, these players are motivated by what might not happen on the field: their interactions, their dedication, their running, their covering and their mutual support. This is why we still get special game moments where the personalities of the smaller teams can give each other great talent as they are tested by tablets, sensors, cameras and countless more.
The US women’s national team is facing an incident at the recent Olympics that revealed a dispute between the formation of old teams and modern athletes and team managers. Head coach Vlatko Andonovski and his team-mates were hanged for over-counting and their choice of ranks for the entire competition. US women did not laugh, and it is shown on the field. He managed the game thinking about the future. It backfired and USWNT failed to achieve its goal of a gold medal in Tokyo.
Now, after the gods have been removed from the scene, the actresses are talking about new goals at camp, and they have nothing to do with metrics.
“What amazes me the most is that there is so much interest in being a team. Not just on and off the field,” Sophie Smith told Sporting News ahead of one USWNT match against Paraguay last month. “The biggest thing I can say that I have found from this camp is that we have to be a team. In order to win the big games we have to have chemistry on the field and that chemistry on the field comes from chemistry outside the field.”
Smith was not at the 2021 Olympics, but Catarina Macario and Becky Sauerbrunn were in Tokyo, and they repeated the same theme. The biggest downside to Ringer is the failure of USMNT making the 2018 World Cup also focuses on chemistry. Obviously you are not arrested from one day to the next.
Is there chemistry with the US men’s international team? It’s hard to say. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen spoke about this how chemistry was a work in progress in 2020. But demonstrations such as the final round of the UEFA Nations League against Mexico and the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2021 seem to indicate that something will happen. Once again, these were very different groups and if there was chemistry, there were no signs of it against Panama. Does the US men’s group have a backbone? With the recent return of Matt Turner, Ricardo Pepi and Brenden Aaronson and the return to the health of Yunus Musah, this is what the controversy is all about.
Explaining Panama’s loss in his previous comments, Berhalter had for some time been aware of the aspects of the game in the game, but had difficulty putting his finger on what was being played on the game.
“It’s a game. It’s people. There’s no need to explain this. Our journeys were too far away. We didn’t have pop,” he said. “For me, there’s a strong side and it wasn’t a reason to try. It was a lack of – I don’t know. We didn’t have 100% today.”
But interviews with journalists also affected skills such as asset management – particularly for Tyler Adams, a long-time participant in the game – as well as the types of games that USMNT users use to monitor matches.
“When you talk about monitoring the game, for us we look at our type of game and how we played based on this and give advice based on this. And it’s very clear,” Berhalter said. “That’s what we do in this game.”
You may be wondering if the sports brands can count on the game, the type that the US women’s team has lost and is trying to get back on track. Andonovski played gambling at the Olympics based on this and was not intimidated when the team faced difficulties. The USMNT has also failed miserably in the face of adversity in Panama, from the harsh weather to the dangerous Canaleros group that shot the USA nose.
Panama, on the other hand, was inspired by a number of unseen factors: the influential coach (Thomas Christiansen, above) urges the team and the nation to call for the magic of the October 10 celebration that brings diversity to Panama: The day was commemorating their first World Cup 2018, which brought the USA. This helped Panama cross the barrier: hitting USMNT in the first qualifying round.
Is Berhalter being forced to disrupt due to overcrowding? Obviously, to some extent. But in the end, the coach’s job – and it’s difficult – is to make sure that all the team building elements come together: field chemistry and team spirit alongside the weighting scales and game types.
“I think that’s how I look, and that’s how I saw it: Obviously it doesn’t seem like a good decision, but I think we should wait until Thursday,” Berhalter said of his decision against Panama. “We would have played the same players [vs. Jamaica] in this game [vs. Panama], I’m not sure we can stand by ourselves the best way to win Wednesday [vs. Costa Rica].
“Once again, what we’re experiencing here is travel and the weather made it difficult. And we had to make, I think, maybe a dangerous idea. The good thing is that we’re still in second place. That’s a good thing.”
The US men’s national team reached the final in October 2017 in third place. They may even have thought that it was a good idea at the time.
