WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Central Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol said on Thursday it will vote next week to arrest Steve Bannon, a former adviser to former President Donald Trump, for insulting Congress for refusing to comply with his summons.

The House of Representatives Committee said it had a vote on Tuesday in a report filing a lawsuit against Bannon, the first part of the case.

“The Select Committee will not tolerate the disgust of our position, which is why we must go ahead and prosecute Bannon for contempt of court,” Democratic Committee chairman Bennie Thompson said in a statement.

A Democratic-led group was formed to investigate January January’s attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters as Trump seeks to change the 2020 presidential election. Trump has falsely claimed the loss of President Joe Biden is fraudulent.

If the House committee approves the charge of insulting Bannon, the matter will go to the entire House vote. The Department of Justice will eventually decide whether to prosecute Republican politicians.

A state attorney in Bannon, who was asked to leave on Thursday, has written a letter stating that his client will not provide evidence or documents until the committee agrees with Trump in a high court case or a court ruling on the matter.

Trump urged former allies to refuse to participate in the alliance, citing higher chances. The former Republican president issued a statement Thursday quoting his false allegations that his supporters “could not stand.”

Thompson resolved a serious dispute over responsibility. “Bannon has refused to cooperate with the Select Committee and has instead been hiding behind incomplete, blanket, and vague ideas about the opportunity he wants to apply for. We are totally denying their responsibility.”

Hundreds of Trump supporters voted for the U.S. presidency on January 6, when Vice President Mike Pence and lawmakers met to confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 election.

The Capitol attack forced Pence, lawmakers, workers and journalists to flee, delaying the announcement of the election results for several hours. Four people died on the same day, one was killed by police and the other by nature. More than 100 police officers were injured, one died the next day. Four officers later committed suicide.

Bannon’s Sabannama was one of a dozen donations issued by the Select Committee, which was released earlier this week. But they are late as some of the nominees have been in talks with the group.

A spokesman for the committee said two complaints – former Trump White House chief of Mark Meadows and former Kash Patel employee – were temporarily delayed because they continued to be involved in the movement.

Posted by Dan Scavino, a former deputy lawmaker at the White House, was also fired for his delay in issuing the legislation. Patel was due to quit work Thursday with Meadows and Scavino on Friday.

Anyone found guilty of insulting Congress is liable to a fine and to imprisonment for up to 12 months.
